Unique Challenges Faced by LGBTQ+ Individuals in Addiction
Members of the LGBTQ+ community often face higher rates of substance abuse due to overlapping social and emotional pressures that their cisgender and heterosexual peers do not experience.
These may include:
- Minority stress from ongoing societal discrimination
- Rejection, stigma, or non-acceptance
- Internalized shame related to sexual orientation or gender identity
- Use of party drugs and chemsex
- Greater risk of co-occurring mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety, and PTSD
These factors can lead many lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and other queer individuals to rely on substances and distractions like chemsex to manage emotional pain.
