Alcohol addiction, also known as alcoholism, is a disease that can affect any age, any culture, ethnicity or religion. Experts say it can come about as a result of genetic, psychological, behavioral, or environmental factors. As a disease, it can change the brain and neurochemistry and over time, can lead to organ failure. Most people believe that to be an alcoholic, you have to drink every day. Not true. Alcoholism can be hard to spot as alcoholics can be periodics, meaning they only drink on occasion, but when they do, they may drink excessive amounts and blackout. Other alcoholics may be binge drinkers, weekend drinkers, or only drink in the evening while others may drink every day. Regardless of how often or how much a person drinks alcohol, dependence on alcohol and the destructive impact it has on one’s life, can be a sure sign of an alcohol problem.
