Person-Centered Therapy (Rogerian Therapy)
The main point of rehabilitation treatment is to provide a patient with the help they need in order to recover from addiction. This is not a journey that a person needs to go through by themselves, which is why therapists and treating professionals are there to provide guidance. However, that doesn’t mean that the individual won’t have to put in some of the work. In fact, person-centered therapy is there to help the client better develop their own growth tendencies.
What Is Person-Centered Therapy?
The psychotherapy form known as person-centered therapy is focused on encouraging a client’s self-actualizing tendency. What does this mean? Well, like the name implies, the process centers the person and their own capacity for growth and self-fulfillment. It essentially allows the person to discover ways in which they themselves can make use of their inbuilt proclivity toward self-actualizing. This method is rarely used on its own, since it heavily focuses on the patient’s own capacities for change. Instead, this approach will be used in conjunction with a variety of different therapeutic approaches that all address different aspects of a person’s life. In the specific case of addiction, for example, it is very important that a person understands their own relationship with substance abuse before person-centered therapy can help them better use their own tools for their recovery.
