Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a tropical evergreen tree in the coffee family that grows naturally in Southeast Asia where its leaves are claimed to provide a soothing relief for muscle pain relief, diarrhea, and as a treatment for opiate addiction and withdrawal. The agent in the leaves contains a chemical known as mitragynine which, similar to opiods, is a pain reliever. Other uses are for treating coughs, depression, and anxiety. However, it is not FDA approved and in fact, there are serious concerns about its toxicity as its safety and effectiveness has not been clinically – determined. Like other drugs with opioid-like effects, kratom might cause dependence, which means users will feel physical withdrawal symptoms when they stop taking the drug. Some users have reported becoming addicted to kratom.
